Eye Tracking Camera — Mono Camera
Q
Can a Monocular Camera like an ordinary webcam be used?
What are the limits?
What are the limits?
A
A Monocular Camera such as an ordinary webcam can also be used for Eye Tracking.
A Mono Camera tracks by recognizing the user's face and eye position from a single camera feed. Because it works without separate depth information, it can be deployed with a relatively simple setup and at low cost.
However, a Mono Camera estimates the viewing distance from the image rather than measuring it directly, so errors can occur depending on the environment.
For a detailed comparison with the Depth Camera, see the table in item 2.1.
Use Cases
· Webcam-based eye tracking
· Low-cost glasses-free 3D systems
· Simple viewpoint-tracking setups
· Laptop and monitor built-in cameras
· Lightweight 3D system configurations
Note
Mono-camera eye tracking has the advantage of a relatively simple HW setup, but its tracking accuracy and stability can differ from a Depth Camera that measures actual distance.
