Case of Introducing a Glasses-Free 3D Display System for Surgical Training
Overview
- Customer: Seoul National University Hospital
- Industry: Medical / Surgical Training / Hospital
- Solution: 32-inch glasses-free 3D display and GPU-based ultra-low latency 3D streaming
- Key Result
- Real-time transmission of 3D endoscopic surgery image
- Real-time viewing of the same stereoscopic image outside the operating room without 3D glasses
- Improved usability and accessibility of medical training infrastructure
1. Background and Challenge
As 3D endoscopic surgery becomes more common, there is a growing need for a training environment that can deliver the same sense of space and depth seen by the surgeon. However, many existing 3D training environments require special 3D glasses, which makes them inconvenient to use. In addition, 3D display equipment suitable for medical training is expensive and limited in supply, so it is often difficult to introduce into actual training environments.
2. MOPIC's Solution
Seoul National University Hospital introduced MOPIC’s glasses-free 3D display system and real-time 3D video playback software at its surgical simulation center.
3D Display Optimized for Medical Training Environment
MOPIC supplied a customized 32-inch glasses-free 3D display for surgical training.
- Optimized stereoscopic effect based on viewing distance for the training environment
- Precise display alignment for clear stereoscopic images without ghosting
GPU-based Ultra-low Latency 3D Video Streaming
MOPIC also supplied a GPU-based ultra-low latency 3D video streaming solution to send 3D endoscopic video from the operating room to an external training room. This made it possible to build a training environment where the same 3D view seen by the surgeon could be checked in real time outside the operating room.

3. Results and Value
Improved Understanding in Surgical Training
Trainees were able to understand anatomical structures and surgical procedures more intuitively in a stereoscopic environment similar to actual surgery.
Cost-effective 3D Training Environment
By applying a monitor-based glasses-free 3D system instead of dedicated 3D equipment, multiple displays could be installed in the training environment, making it possible to build a cost-effective 3D training environment.
Expansion of Digital Medical Training Environment
By introducing a glasses-free 3D-based surgical training system, the hospital’s digital medical training environment was further strengthened.
Customer Interview
The most important thing in surgical training is to accurately deliver the same sense of space and depth seen by the surgeon. Through MOPIC’s glasses-free 3D display, we were able to share the same stereoscopic view outside the operating room, and the usability of the training environment greatly improved.
